What Is It?
2005 Nissan Altima
What's Special About It?
Since this generation of the Altima debuted just a few years ago, it has had a number of redesigned competitors, such as the Honda Accord and Mazda 6, squaring off against it in the family car arena. To keep it competitive, Nissan has made a number of changes for 2005 that address its few weak points. Chief among them are an upgraded cabin which features a new instrument panel and center console, along with a sportier three-spoke steering wheel and new upholstery. A DVD-based navigation system is a new option that pushes the Altima further upscale in the family sedan spectrum.
Emphasizing the Altima's sporting intentions are smoked headlights and taillights, a new grille and more aggressive hood sculpting. New wheels and a few new colors round out the body updates. As if the Altima wasn't already quick enough, the V6 model sports even more power than last year 250 horsepower and 249 pound-feet of torque increases of 5 horsepower and 3 lb-ft over the 2004 version.
Eager to revitalize its stake in the midsize sedan market, Nissan is going to release the 2005 Altima early it goes on sale around mid-February 2004.
What's Edmunds' Take?
In our recent family sedan comparison test, the Altima earned accolades for its energetic performance and roomy cabin, but lost points for its overly plastic cabin décor. With the 2005 version's improvements to the interior and tweaks to the body, the Altima should remain a major player in this game. John DiPietro
