REPORT: Nissan Prepares Altima Hybrid for North America

    0 Ratings
TOKYO — Nissan Motors said it plans to build a new hybrid edition of its midsize Altima sedan at one of its U.S. plants beginning in late 2006, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times.

The Japanese automaker is expected to assemble the gas-electric Altima in Smyrna, Tennessee, or Canton, Mississippi, where the standard gasoline versions of the car currently are built.

The Altima hybrid, which will be marketed as a 2007 model, will be the second Japanese-designed hybrid to be built in North America. Toyota announced earlier it plans to assemble a gas-electric edition of its midsize Camry sedan at its Georgetown, Kentucky, plant about the same time. Honda currently imports its midsize Accord Hybrid from Japan.

By 2007, Ford Motor Co. also is expected to be building and selling gas-electric versions of its all-new Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan midsize sedans.

What this means to you: More choices are coming for buyers of mainstream family sedans who want a high-mileage, low-emissions hybrid, and most will be built here in North America.
