- Nissan is recalling over 4,000 2010 Frontier, Pathfinder and Xterra vehicles.
- Fasteners used for the steering column and front airbag could come loose.
- The affected vehicles were built between February 22 and March 13, 2010.
WASHINGTON — Nissan is recalling 4,038 2010 Frontier, Pathfinder and Xterra vehicles because improperly tightened fasteners could affect the steering column and front passenger airbag deployment, said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The vehicles were built from February 22 to March 13, 2010.
"On some of the potentially affected vehicles, the fasteners securing the passenger front airbag module, and also the fasteners securing the steering shaft positioning bracket, may not have been tightened to the proper torque specification," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "In the event of a crash, the passenger front airbag deployment trajectory might be affected. The fasteners could possibly come out of the steering column positioning bracket increasing the risk of a crash."
In other documentation filed with the federal government, Nissan said the "vehicle operator will hear a loud rattling noise" if the fasteners securing the front passenger airbag module are not properly tightened. The steering column may also begin to rattle if the fasteners securing the steering shaft positioning bracket are not tightened to specification.
In this instance, "if the vehicle continues to be driven in the condition, the fasteners could possibly come out of the steering column positioning bracket," said Nissan.
Nissan dealers will inspect the steering column and front passenger airbag fasteners and replace any missing fasteners. They will all tighten loose fasteners. The recall is expected to begin in April. Nissan owners can contact the company at 800-647-7261.

@niss2:
All the other automakers are quick to do recalls because they don't want to encounter what Toyota went through. If it wasn't for that debacle, how many of them will be that upfront? Quit being a blind bat fanboi!

I find it strange that the Suzuki Equator wasn't included in this...

Better than waiting until a few people die (ie Toyota). Toyota has the word TOY in it because that is about the craftsmanship of Toyota now a days. Just CHEAP.
