Mitsubishi SSS
What's special about it?
This tongue twister is the third in line of a passel of concept vehicles built on the same platform - the SST, SSU and now, SSS. Reflecting the industrial "Geo-Mechanical" design philosophy introduced on the SST, the SSS is the seminal conception of the "enhanced utility sedan" that combines the comfort of a sport sedan with the storage ability of an SUV. Unique features include front and rear doors that slide on hinges so that you don't have to leave an apologetic note for the ding on the door of the car next to you. Fold-down rear seats allow you to stow two bikes upright in the cargo area, and a computer system in the center console with a mouse and head-up display (HUD) lets you keep your eyes on the road rather than the instrument panel. The vehicle is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 mounted transversely, with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and a four-wheel independent suspension.
Why should I care?
The SSS is another cue that we'll be seeing more vehicles that combine the comfort and functionality of trucks and cars. This one, however, favors the car-ness over the truck-ness, which could be the next trend in automotive design.
