CYPRESS, California — Mitsubishi has confirmed that its new entry-level crossover, already on sale in Japan as the RVR and unveiled this week at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show as the ASX, will be launched this fall in North America as the 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport.
The North American version will debut in late March at the 2010 New York Auto Show.
Mitsubishi says the new model "will form the foundation of the Outlander range of vehicles in North America for 2011," a portfolio that extends to the range-topping Outlander GT V6.
The company said the 2011 Outlander Sport will feature a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and will deliver average fuel economy of 30 mpg. Electronic AWD will be available as an option.

Not a bad effort on the exterior, but the rear bumper a bit busy for my tastes. My real concern is whether the interior will be up to standards and the bigger question: how viable is Mitsubishi as a business in the US 5-10 yrs down the road?
Yes, they have a cult following for some of their EVO/Lancer products, but need for than niche products to survive in the competitive US. This product might help, but I'd still take a Ford Escape, Hyundai Tucson, Honda CRV before a Mitsu. Saw pics of the all new KIA Sportage and it has my vote as the class benchmark..

It doesn't look too bad. Except why would Mitsubishi use the same face on all of its products? It's like Audi all over again. Also, Mitsubishi should work harder on the interior. It looks very plain, and not that high in quality. It's also amazing that the company that helped Hyundai get going, is now lagging way behind them. Mitsubishi should for an alliance with Peugeot/Citroen, as they have great looking and great performing cars.

I agree that ASX was not a viable name for the US market,
but Lancer "something" (Lancer-cX, Lancer Crossover, etc) would have been a better name
to avoid the confusion with the regular Outlander and get the right idea on the size of the vehicle.

Looks promising. Manual tranny combined with awd would be greatly appreciated. Also independent rear suspension, rear discs, well-weighted steering, tractable engine and supportive seating. Subaru owns much of this market fairly uncontested. The small cuv market has a bright future I suspect as people move away from their long, heavy suvs but appreciate the utility the high two box design offerred.
