These spy photos of the 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander indicate that Mitsubishi is looking to tone down its styling in search of broader appeal. Although this prototype has camouflage front and rear, you can still make out its more conservative shape. Also evident is this Outlander's size. With no Montero Sport in the lineup, Mitsubishi is looking to push the Outlander closer to the midsize category.

The 2007 Outlander will be built on a stretched version of the next-generation Lancer platform that will help it to accommodate as many as seven passengers in three rows of seats. It's uncertain whether a five-passenger Outlander will continue into production after the 2006 model year or if Mitsu will simply rely on this new, larger version of the vehicle to represent the company in the sport-utility segment.

Mitsubishi will also be upgrading the Lancer's powertrain from the current 2.4-liter, 160-horsepower four-cylinder to a 3.0-liter V6 believed to be capable of around 250 hp. This new engine will be mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Look for the 2007 Outlander's debut at the Tokyo auto show this fall.
