NEW YORK — Mitsubishi said its five-passenger 2007 Outlander SUV will hit dealerships in November in two trim levels, LS and XLS.

The compact SUV was unveiled on Wednesday at the New York International Auto Show.

The Outlander is equipped with a new 3.0-liter SOHC V6 that produces 220 horsepower at 6,250 rpm and 204 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. The V6 is linked to a six-speed automatic transmission that allows manual shifting. Outlander XLS models will have optional steering-wheel paddle shifters. Both models will be available with standard front-wheel drive or an optional four-wheel-drive system. Eighteen-inch alloy wheels are standard on XLS models, while LS models are equipped with 16-inch wheels.

The Outlander's safety package includes standard front side airbags, side curtain airbags and antilock brakes. Options include a satellite navigation system, a hands-free Bluetooth cellular phone system and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system.

What this means to you: The '07 Outlander is a make-or-break vehicle for the embattled Japanese brand. Kind of like every new model seems to be these days for a lot of companies.
