TOKYO — Mitsubishi says it is targeting fuel economy of 70+ mpg with its redesigned Mirage compact, which goes on sale in March 2012 in Thailand and will be rolled out later in the year to other global markets.
There are no immediate plans to sell the new Mirage in the U.S.
The heart of the five-door, five-passenger sedan is a new 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine that features a stop-start system and is linked with other fuel-saving technologies, including a brake energy-recovery system. It is mated to a new continuously variable automatic transmission.
The redesigned Mirage is built on a new compact platform and will be assembled in Thailand.

It's going to be even harder for Mitsu to make the EVO not lame.
And please no 7 foot wing.

The exterior on the concept drawings (last few pics in the series) was actually pretty good. Talk about lost in translation when they brought it to life.

70+ MPG would allow MUCH to be forgiven on the styling front. And, as others have said, the interior looks high-quality, simple and well laid out.
Maybe, in a lively color (like yellow, orange or lime green ) with some decent-looking alloys, this might not be so dull.

As long as it passes safety and emission standards and comes with a manual why not?
The pictures provided leave me with two compelling questions:
a) Why would they choose such a dull gray color for their promotional photos?
b) Is that 3 cylinder really fast enough to allow it to drive on a sharply banked race track
or was it glued into that position?

concept sketch- decent looking compact car; production reality: generic bargain basement econobox. Could have been a Hyundai or Kia ten years ago. Interior looks ok for its class, but not enough to make up for the wrapper. Mitsubishi can only be hoping to sell this on fuel economy and price, but hard to believe they couldn't come up with a better design.

Right after college I almost bought 2 different Mirage Turbo's. One was the Dodge Colt version, a leftover '87, and the other was a brand new, just introduced, '89. The '89 was a really terrific car to drive, lots of power (for the time) and a nice shifting 5-speed.
In the end though I bought a used '87 Mustang LX 5.0 5-speed.

I concur with 91camrs. I hate that darth vader/vintage battlestar galactica cylon grill that they slapped on everything over the past few years. 70mpg is definately appealing though an awd turbo charged version of it would be cool too.

Good god, can't Mitsu design something decent looking? I know size dictates some of the look, but this thing is hideous. A car meant to be just something to get you from point a to point b. Forget passion of any kind.
Perhaps I'm in the minority of people who want, expect and demand that the cars I drive are reflective of my own passions and desires. This thing isn't inspirational or aspirational. Maybe they want it to be the toaster of small cars.

I am glad to see it doesn't have the big mouth EVO look...I am hoping all their future cars get a new look. I can't remember the last time I had a comment about any products from this company.
