TOKYO — Mitsubishi plans to contest next year's Dakar rally and other FIA-sponsored events with its new MRX09, the so-called "Racing Lancer," inspired by the Lancer Sportback. The MRX09 will be formally unveiled in October at the 2008 Paris Auto Show.

Under the hood is a potent 3.0-liter turbodiesel that has already been tested in the Pajero Evolution. The V6 makes 255 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. Power is directed to all four wheels through a Ricardo five-speed sequential gearbox and a limited-slip center diff.

The MRX09 sits on a tubular steel frame. Its carbon fiber bodywork was inspired by the Lancer Sportback.

What this means to you: In case you were wondering, the automaker says MRX09 stands for "Mitsubishi Rally Cross-Country 2009." — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
