2008 Geneva Auto Show Preview: Mitsubishi Prototype-S

GENEVA — Mitsubishi has pulled the sheet off its Prototype-S, a thinly veiled, near-production-ready version of its new Lancer Sportback, which will make its official debut at the 2008 Geneva Auto Show next week.

The Prototype-S picks up where the 2005 Concept Sportback left off, borrowing heavily from the Lancer Evo's exterior styling cues. The concept rides on 19-inch low-profile tires and five-spoke alloy wheels.

In the rear, the five-door Prototype-S boasts a deep liftgate and a color-keyed roof spoiler, plus wraparound taillamps.

The cockpit features brown leather upholstery and a dashboard and door panels trimmed in black suede.

The Lancer Sportback goes on sale later this year in Europe, and Mitsubishi estimates the new model will account for 70 percent of Lancer sales in Europe.

What this means to you: The global Lancer portfolio continues to expand. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
