2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart Full Test Video

For years, the regular-strength Subaru WRX has been the go-to performance car for those looking to spend no more than $30,000. With the introduction of the 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart that equation changes significantly. For one thing, the new Ralliart is priced just like a WRX (thousands less than a WRX STI), and while it's not exactly an Evo, it has all kinds of Evo hardware   The Ralliart even looks like an Evo. Only the Ralliart badges and the 18-inch wheels from the Lancer GTS suggest its lesser status. It features like a 6 speed twin-clutch automated manual transmission just like the Evo, and the all-wheel-drive system has been lifted straight from the Evolution IX. The big difference is the engine, although this almost-as-hot turbocharged 2.0-liter inline 4 makes the  Ralliart a serious machine in its own right.  The 237-horsepower engine helps the Ralliart delivers on its performance promises. Although the Ralliart's turbo is slightly smaller than the Evo's there's almost no turbo lag. The Ralliart clocks in a credible 6.6 seconds from 0-60.   The Ralliart's standard braking hardware and slightly narrow 215-section tires are two places where Mitsu saved some money. But we expect owners will upgrade both within hours of taking delivery. The brakes offer good pedal feel, resist fade and are easy to modulate. Even so the Ralliart requires 128 feet to come to a full stop from 60, a relatively unimpressive number that's likely the result of the narrow tires.   The tires also conspire to keep down the Ralliart's slalom speed too, as the car is prone to oversteer. Still, 65 miles per hour through the cones is a good result -- although it's no easy task. But it's clear the Ralliart has a lot more in it.  I was told there's off road footage – start at end of this graph True to the Ralliart's name and Mitsubishi's heritage, this Lancer feels just at home off road as it does on.   If you're looking to add a little more attitude to the Lancer Ralliart, we suggest the Recaro package. In addition to the seats you'll also get HID headlights and a kickin' Rockford Fosgate Sound system.  Dynamically the 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart is serious performance sedan in its own right. It's quick, fun and you can toss it into corners and drive like a hero. And while the Ralliart ultimately lacks the Evo Ten's edge, most drivers will be too busy having fun to even notice, especially with its affordable WRX-style price tag.
