    • In April, Mitsubishi priced the four-passenger Mitsubishi i at $28,850.

CYPRESS, California — Citing "unforeseen changes in market conditions," Mitsubishi on Friday said it is raising the price of the 2012 Mitsubishi i electric vehicle to $29,985.

The price includes an $860 destination charge.

The new pricing reflects a $1,135 increase. In April, Mitsubishi priced the four-passenger Mitsubishi i at $28,850.

The pricing is still lower than Mitsubishi had originally predicted. It had earlier said that the Mitsubishi i would start at around $35,000-$40,000. It is also considerably lower than two of its closest competitors, the Nissan Leaf and the Chevrolet Volt.

The Leaf starts at $36,050, including an $850 destination charge. The Volt starts at $39,995, including an $850 destination charge.

The Mitsubishi EV is scheduled to launch first in Hawaii, California, Oregon and Washington in November.

Mitsubishi said the Mitsubishi i will be eligible for a federal tax credit of $7,500.

Inside Line says: Let's see how long Mitsubishi can keep the price of the i below the psychologically important $30K mark.

Japan's exchange rate is the reason for the price increase.  Mitsubishi needs to make it in America to get the price down even further.  Should sell pretty well since it will be the lowest priced electric car in America.  After the national $7500 rebate, will only cost about $22,000.  Some states give another $2,000- $3,000 rebate and will bring the price down to $19,000- $20,000.  Should only cost about $2 a day in electricity to operate.

Sad so many people automatically think anything different then the norm is ugly.

I've seen several of these driving around now and they are clever looking.  I'd buy this over the Volt or a Leaf.

It's not the look I have a problem with. It's the fact that they want to charge you $30k for it.

The global version is way better looking than this. But then they slapped on that silly bumper, those lights, and wheels.

This is why Mitsubishi will fail in the US...kill off your fun cars...become boring and bland...wait that's Toyota's philosophy...never mind...they'll sell billions...

I hope Mitsu isn't counting on this car to save them in the United States.
