Mitsubishi "Concept Sportback" to Debut at Frankfurt Motor Show

TOKYO — Mitsubishi has released the first sketches of its latest concept car, the Concept Sportback.

Set to make its world debut at Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the Mitsubishi Concept Sportback gives the first indications of the company's vision for its next generation of compact cars and will be the design inspiration for a new European five-door sport hatchback that will replace the Lancer.

The concept gives strong hints to Mitsubishi's future design direction. The car's exterior features a sporty, wedgelike profile, sharply chiseled lines, an assertive stance resulting from the combination of long wheelbase and wide track, and a high-shouldered rear end.

The Concept Sportback also marks the debut of a new Mitsubishi platform. This platform is flexible enough to accommodate a wide range of derivatives and will spawn an array of new models over the next three years including SUVs, small MPVs and family hatchbacks.

What this means to you: Mitsubishi has had a troubled few years, but a good design can quickly restore shine to a tarnished reputation. We're looking forward to seeing the real thing in September.
