Mitsubishi ASX Bound for 2010 Geneva Auto Show

GENEVA — The Mitsubishi ASX, a compact crossover that previews a new entry-level crossover for the U.S., will make its formal debut in March at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show. It targets the Ford Kuga and the Peugeot 3008 in Europe and is the Europe-spec version of the Mitsubishi RVR, which is slated to go on sale in Japan starting in February.

"We will get it in the fall of 2010, but I don't know if it will be called ASX," said Moe Durand, Mitsubishi Motors North America spokesman, on Wednesday morning in a telephone conversation with Inside Line. "It will slot in below the [Mitsubishi] Outlander, but we have no idea about pricing at this point."

The base 2009 Mitsubishi Outlander ES starts at $21,345, including a $765 destination charge.

Although Durand was unable to confirm the U.S. version's name, IL sources say the new compact crossover will be called the Outlander Sport in the States.

Mitsubishi on Tuesday said the ASX will be "sequentially introduced in European countries from late spring 2010." It is smaller than the Mitsubishi Outlander and seats five passengers.

The Mitsubishi ASX gets the new 1.8-liter turbocharged diesel engine linked to a six-speed manual transmission. It will feature the fuel-saving "Automatic Stop & Go" technology.

Inside Line says: Look for a smaller, cheaper version of the Mitsubishi Outlander in the U.S. in a few months. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent

i sat in the Mitsu ASX at the Indonesia Auto Show in Jakarta this week.  It was a teal blue Middle East spec, LHD (Indonesia is a RHD country).  There was no explanatory literature and no one on hand who knew about it.  That said, I liked it (except for the shark mouth front).  It is about the size of the nearby Audi Q5, with good seats, egress and visibility for this 6'2", 200lb American.  Unfortunately the trunk was locked so I was unable to judge carrying capacity, same for hood and engine.  Sitting in the Q5 before and after made me notice the more solid feel of the German car.  But if Mitsu sells the ASX at a decent price and offers a reliable product, it will be do well in the U.S.  I am considering a VW Tiguan on my return to the U.S., but am worried about VW's lack of reliability and cost of repairs/premium fuel.  Ditto for Q5, plus initial cost.  The other usual suspects for small SUVs dont excite, with possible exception of Nissan Rogue.

Not a bad looking car and America definately needs a wider variety of affordable, small all-wheel drive vehicles.  The name is terrible though!!!

This vehicle is smaller than it looks.

The ASX is aproximately the size of a Scion Xb,.

I believe it will come to the US to compete with the Scion Xb, Kia Soul, Nissan Cube, and may be the Honda Fit and even the New Ford Fiesta.

    Yes, this is good.

They're on the right path! Just don't mess up and deliver!

And please, work on the Galant and the Eclipse; there's three keywords for you Mitsubishi regarding these two:

    AWD - Turbo - Slim

    Make it happen!

The specs were leaked in Asia last week

There are also intersting parallels with the Nissan Qashqai

i think it looks good because it looks almost identical to the A5.  and i do agree that mitsu should rework the galant as a priority.  the galant should receive treatments like the lancer did to be at least competitive to the big boys.

Sorry Mitsubishi, but this is not the right idea. You need to concentrate on more important things. Such as completely reworking your Gallant sedan and Eclipse coupe. These two cars have been neglected for quite some time now, especially the Gallant. You should strive to turn it into a Camry and Accord fighter like Subaru has done with its Legacy.
