Mideast Mini: Praktiko Tiger Kub

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Praktiko GT, a local manufacturer, wants to slug it out toe to toe with India's Tata in the low-priced global car market with its new Tiger Kub.

The company outlined its plans late last year at the Dubai auto show. The Tiger Kub is intended for sale primarily in such emerging markets as India and Africa, and is designed to sell for around $3,000 — close to the price of Tata's new minicar, which is being unveiled next week at Delhi's Auto Expo show.

Praktiko says the Tiger Kub will have a top speed of 60 mph and will return fuel economy of 60 mpg. The company says the car's engine was developed originally for the Swatchmobile that morphed into the Smart.

What this means to you: The resemblance to an overgrown go-kart is no coincidence; that's Praktiko's first target market for its tiny engine. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
