We’ve already seen the Mini crossover concept being presented at the Paris Auto Show, cold weather testing in Scandinavia and lapping the Nurburgring in Germany.

Recently, our spy shooters spotted the Mini crossover again, this time in Death Valley, California undergoing hot weather testing. This new crossover will be Mini’s first all-wheel drive model and the extra bit of ground clearance seen here means this Mini should be able to handle mild dirt roads and gravel trails. A front wheel drive version is planned as well.

In these latest spy shots a few details seem to be emerging. Although it at first appears that access to the cargo area is through barn- style doors like the Clubman, it’s obviously just part of the camouflage. It’s also obvious the new Mini crossover will be a true four door with full rear doors and not partial doors like the Clubman.

Power will come from Mini’s 1.6 liter engine, with both turbo and non-turbo versions offered. European models will likely get a diesel version too.

We still expect a production version of the Mini crossover to be shown at the Frankfurt auto show in September. Look for this newest Mini to go on sale in the early part of 2010 with a base price just under $30,000.
