MUNICH, Germany — Following its launch at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show in March, the all-new 2011 Mini Countryman will go on sale in September in Germany, priced from $27,600, including the 19 percent VAT (value-added tax).

At launch, the new Countryman will come with a choice of three gasoline and two diesel engines, plus a choice of a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Mini will also offer an optional ALL4 all-wheel-drive system on the top gas and diesel models.

The basic 98-horsepower Mini One Countryman is priced from $27,600, while the 90-hp Mini One D Countryman starts at $30,100. Stickers range up to $35,400 for the Mini Cooper D Countryman ALL4 and $38,200 for the range-topping 184-hp Mini Cooper S Countryman ALL4.

The 2011 Mini Countryman goes on sale in the U.S. in January 2011.

Inside Line says: Without VAT, U.S. stickers should be considerably lower — try $30,942 for a Mini Cooper S Countryman ALL4. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent

    Are Mini's reliable?
If they are, I would definitely get one.

No worries on the rooftop antenna:  I'm sure they will be just like the Clubman's antenna, which you can very easily unscrew for temporary large rooftop loads.

What I haven't seen yet is what the ground clearance will be.  I've seen "10mm higher than any previous Mini" but that must be a mistake since that's less than half an inch higher.  Could they mean 10cm?  That would be 4 inches, making it about 4.5" greater clearance than the Clubman, for a total of 8.5".  I'd be surprised if they go that high, but that would be great.

    ARZE,

The best reason to bypass a BMW over a mini: fun.  BMWs just aren't as much fun.  I've had 3 BMWs and a Cooper S in the past 7 years.  The Cooper S was a delight.  The e9x BMWs were not.  I settled on a 335i to more comfortably transport my son.  That was a mistake.  Not because the 3 ended up a lemon but because the 3 just didn't make me happy to drive it.

If Mini had had a 4 door vehicle when I needed to move up, they would have had a sale to me.

And short of ED, a 328i for around 30k is fairly difficult.

One tiny detail that in my opinion has been a very frustrating mistake has been that all of these crossover manufacturers keep putting the antenna on the roof instead of on the fender or some where else. For example my moms CRV has the stupid thing on the roof so when we bought a new mattress instead of simple being able to strap it down to the roof we had to ask some one with an old jeep cherokee to help us pick it up. Placing the antenna on the roof totally cuts the ammount of stuff you can carry in/on your car by half.

Seems about right.  People belly-aching about price do not seem to understand that a Cooper S for 26-27k is pretty standard.  30k is not that unusual.  This'll be much more car for Cooper owners who have a need to get something bigger but do not like the generic cars offered in this class.

Coopers aren't designed to appeal to Honda/Toyota value buyers.

Icecube, I agree with your point totally, but need to point out that (a)$38k includes value added taxes and (b) the note at the bottom of the article says the top line Countryman would be about $31k in the US.

Still, that kind of money gets you a lot of more powerful vehicles, for example a Forester XT.
