2009 Geneva Auto Show Preview: Mini John Cooper Works Convertible

GENEVA — Mini calls it the "world's fastest small premium cabriolet," a tidy little niche in the marketplace but an attractive one. The John Cooper Works Convertible is set to debut next month at the 2009 Geneva Auto Show prior to an on-sale date in the U.K. of March 28.

The convertible will have the same power plant and engineering as the John Cooper Works version of the Mini hatchback, with a 1.6-liter twin-turbo engine that makes 211 horsepower paired with a larger air intake and exhaust system. The car has an appealing combination of a 146-mph top speed and combined fuel economy that's the equivalent of U.S. 34 mpg.

Inside, there's an Alcantara steering wheel, sport seats and standard air-conditioning as well as glossy piano black interior trim.

Lightweight 17-inch alloy wheels with a cross-spoke design and John Cooper Works badging on the trunk, grille, brakes and door sills dress up this convertible version.

The JCW Convertible will be priced at the equivalent of $34,100 and will be built in the U.K.

Inside Line says: Fast, fun convertible will charm showgoers in Geneva. — Laura Sky Brown, Correspondent
