2004 Mini Cooper S MC40
What's Special About It?
To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the original Mini Cooper's win at Rallye Monte Carlo in 1964, Mini will release 1,000 limited-edition hatchbacks this spring. The winning car in Monte Carlo was a stock Cooper S (good for all of 70 horsepower at that time), so the commemorative cars will also be stock 163 hp in these modern times. All will be badged "MC40" and painted Chili Red, according to the original car's bright red paint job. Additionally, Mini will individually number each car, and the winning driver, Paddy Hopkirk, will autograph them. Hopkirk's car wore the number 37 on its doors, so these Minis will, too, though, they'll be magnetic so that owners can take them off as desired. On the hood, each special Cooper S carries the original car's "33-EJB" marking. Finally, a large "GB" badge on the hatch proudly announces Mini's British heritage.
Aside from all the badging, each car gets distinctive red-and-black leather seats, an auxiliary gauge pack, chrome mirrors, distinctive two-piece 17-inch wheels (with all-season run-flat tires) and all the Sport Package equipment.
What's Edmunds' Take?
Mini dealers will begin taking orders for the Cooper S MC40 right away with an anticipated delivery in April 2004. If you're a Mini fanatic who somehow doesn't already have a Cooper (or can afford a second one), better hightail it to the dealer now. Erin Riches
