With all new sheetmetal and a heavily revised interior, Mini’s redesigned 2009 Cooper convertible makes its debut at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. Even with global auto sales stalling, Mini has managed to improve on last year’s sales. Bang for the buck has to be a major reason because the convertible Cooper has a starting price just under $25,000. The power soft top comes with a sliding-roof function and can be opened or closed at speeds up to 20 mph. New rollover bars behind the rear seats deploy automatically in an accident and Mini has increased storage space, with an expanded luggage compartment and two-position package shelf. There are also new colors, new wheels and new upholstery choices. The standard Cooper convertible is powered by a 118-horsepower 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, while the Cooper S convertible gets a turbocharged direct-injection 1.6 liter engine, rated at 172 hp. Just in time for spring, Mini says the new Convertible Cooper will go on sale March of 2009.
