2006 Mercury Milan
What's Special About It?
The Mercury twin to the Ford Fusion shown in Detroit, the Milan is one of six new Mercury vehicles that are slated to debut within the next few years. As with the Fusion, this is Ford Motor Company's serious assault on the Accord and Camry.
As is typical of this segment, buyers will have a choice of inline four and V6 power. The 2.3-liter Duratec "23" inline four provides 160 horsepower and can be matched to either a manual or automatic gearbox, both having five speeds. The 210-hp Duratec "30" (yes, that stands for 3.0-liter) V6 is mated to a six-speed automatic, an unusual feature in this class which should help optimize both performance and fuel efficiency.
Rear passengers will enjoy class-leading legroom courtesy of the long 107.4-inch wheelbase, and trunk volume is cavernous at 15.8 cubic feet.
The whole shebang is wrapped in a stylish yet gimmick-free body. The Milan's profile reminds us of an S-Class Benz and, along with the trademark waterfall-style grille, gives this midsize a classy look. A premium interior treatment continues the upscale treatment, offering a choice of satin metallic or mahogany accents along with contrasting stitching for the optional two-tone leather seats.
What's Edmunds' Take?
Although it doesn't offer a V6 with as much all-out power as Nissan's Altima or Honda's Accord, the Milan's six-speed automatic should help close the performance gap. With its sharp looks, spacious cabin and promise of agile handling, the Milan gives buyers an attractive option to the status quo. — John DiPietro
