2006 Mercury Mariner
What's Special About It?
Mercury's version of the Ford Escape Hybrid offers a little more pizzazz and a nicer cabin than its Blue Oval cousin. Although originally stated to debut as a 2007 model, the Mariner Hybrid's introduction was pushed ahead to cater to increasing consumer demand for hybrid vehicles.
All the benefits of the Escape Hybrid are found here, including economy-carlike fuel efficiency (rated at 33 city and 29 highway) coupled with performance that virtually mirrors that of a much thirstier V6 Escape/Mariner. As the Mariner Hybrid will be able to run up to 25 mph solely on electric power, it's possible to achieve figures even higher than that city estimate, based on our experience with the Ford Escape Hybrid.
What's Edmunds' Take?
Usually we're not big fans of "twinned" vehicles that typically offer little more than exterior gingerbread and slight interior differences to validate their existence. In this case, however, we'll make an exception, as we're glad to see Ford increasing production of its gas-sipping hybrid SUV. — John DiPietro
