Mercedes-Benz Vision B Concept
What's Special About It?
Mercedes calls this small utility vehicle a "compact sports tourer," but strip away the marketingspeak and it's really a look at Mercedes' idea for a small entry-level crossover vehicle akin to BMW's recently introduced X3. The thrust of the Vision B is efficient packaging as it crams room for four and a flexible cargo space into a vehicle with an extremely small footprint. Like most small crossover vehicles, the Vision B is low to the ground for more carlike handling while its elevated driving position still affords an expanded view of the road. A four-cylinder diesel engine gives the Vision B strong, yet efficient power but there's little doubt that small gasoline engines would be offered as well.
What's Edmunds' Take?
Given that the larger, but similar in design, Vision R concept is headed for showrooms next year, don't be surprised to see the Vision B following closely on its heels. Mercedes is counting on the continued migration from truck-based SUVs to more carlike crossover vehicles and the B-Class, as it's likely to be called, would be well positioned to take advantage. — Ed Hellwig
