We see a hint of Maybach in the lines of the CLS, but find the overall execution far superior to that uber-priced sedan. | September 15, 2009

    What Is It?

    What's Special About It?
Blending the sleek lines of a coupe with the practicality of a sedan, the Vision CLS is Mercedes' latest attempt to blur the lines between traditional market segments. Only three inches shorter than the E-Class sedan, the CLS uses a more rakish profile and slim rear doors to create the look of an extended coupe. Even more importantly, the CLS was designed to deliver the kind of power and handling one would expect from such a dynamically styled luxury car. An efficient yet powerful twin turbodiesel engine develops 265 horsepower and over 400 pound-feet of torque while a seven-speed automatic transmission and 19-inch wheels and tires put the power to the ground.

The cabin is awash in thick, soft leather while light-tone wood accents brighten the dashboard. Slightly more sophisticated than the CLK, but more expressive than the top-of-the-line S-Class, the interior of the CLS is spacious enough for a driver, three adult passengers and their luggage.

    Why Should You Care?
Mercedes may have labeled this a concept, but the near production quality of its fit and finish assures that it will be hitting Mercedes' showrooms in the not-too-distant future. Calling it a coupe is a bit of a stretch, but regardless of what classification it falls into, it has the looks to draw customers in without the silly promotional gimmicks. — Ed Hellwig
