Mercedes-Benz Vision GST
What's special about it?
Like a couple of the other concepts at this show, the Vision GST is a combination touring car, SUV and minivan. Within its S-class-length body, the GST (Grand Sports Tourer) boasts "butterfly"-style doors with no B-pillar and spacious seating for six via three rows of seats. Should you want to throw a mountain bike into the leather-, wood- and aluminum-trimmed cabin, the four rear seats fold down and are removable.
The exterior design incorporates some familiar themes, such as the grille and arcing greenhouse that are reminiscent of the CL coupe, while other aspects, such as the body side contours and massive 22-inch double-spoke alloys (wearing 275/40s up front and 295/40s out back) are unique to the GST. The futuristic body also features a glass roof whose level of tint is electronically adjustable.
Touring car attributes include a navigation system as well as flat screen monitors built into the front seatbacks so that passengers can watch a DVD or play a video game while on a long journey. The Sport part of the name is well deserved, considering the impressive hardware of the GST. A 360-horsepower 5.5-liter V8, a five-speed automanual gearbox and electronic all-wheel drive motivate the GST. Mercedes claims this substantial vehicle can skedaddle to 60 mph in just under 7 seconds.
