DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — In what is sure to be a polarizing choice for a paint job, Mercedes-Benz on Tuesday rolled out a flashy gold-painted SLS AMG at the 2009 Dubai Auto Show.
Dubbed "AMG Desert Gold," the paint job is a one-off at this point. But Mercedes-Benz said in a statement that "given sufficient customer demand, this special gold paint finish could become available as an individual optional extra from the AMG Performance Studio." No word on what such a choice would add to the car's bottom line.
The paint is a matte gold accented by a deep black paint finish on all features that are usually done in chrome or "silver shadow." Mercedes-Benz said the black touches ensure "a striking contrast with the matte silk sheen of the gold paintwork."
It also described the paint choice as "a token of respect for the Middle East." The Gulf region is the fourth-largest market for AMG following the U.S., Germany and Japan.

Hideous and a step backward compared to the SLR. That paint color recalls a soiled nappy.

If I rub it will a blue Genie pop out and offer me 3 wishes? Even though they were trying to respect regional tastes I don't think it looks that bad. It's definitely not too outlandish for the US market if it ever washed ashore here. In fact I think this color is more suited to this car than the red...even though red was a great look on the original.
