Tuner Special: Hamann Volcano

LAUPHEIM, Germany — There wouldn't seem to be that much room for improvement in the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, but that hasn't stopped German tuner Hamann from trying.

Known for its high-performance enhancements of such exotic brands as Ferrari and Lamborghini, Hamann took the range-topping Mercedes and made it more powerful and distinctive.

Hamann reworked the 5.4-liter V8, pushing output to 690 horsepower and torque to 612 pound-feet through the use of a reprogrammed engine control unit, high-performance exhaust manifolds and a sport exhaust system with six tailpipes. After the mechanical makeover, the Volcano jets from zero to 60 mph in less than 3.6 seconds, with a top speed of 216 mph.

The car rides on 21-inch Edition Race forged alloy wheels wrapped in 255/30ZR21 tires in front and 345/25ZR21s at the rear.

Hamann adds carbon-fiber wing extensions front and rear, as well as side skirt attachments and sheathings and a rear diffuser. A new hood features an integrated air intake, and the front spoiler has been replaced. Paint schemes include a choice of aluminum/chrome or white/matte. Inside, the Volcano gets aluminum pedals and footrests, carbon fiber trim and Alcantara upholstery.

Inside Line says: This is one wicked-looking SLR. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
