    Just the Facts:
    • The redesigned SLK-Class goes on sale this summer in the U.S.
    • The roadster features new direct-injection four- and six-cylinder engines.
    • Mercedes introduces a new panoramic "vario" roof that changes from light to dark at the touch of a button.

MONTVALE, New Jersey — Mercedes-Benz has pulled the covers off its redesigned 2012 SLK-Class, providing an early glimpse at the roadster's new styling — including an exotic panoramic "vario" roof that changes transparency — and new direct-injection engines. The 2012 SLK goes on sale this summer in the U.S.

The two-seater gets a new face that not only recalls classic Mercedes-Benz roadsters from the '50s, but also conjures a family resemblance with the current range-topping SLS AMG. While the new design is more aerodynamically efficient, it is the choice of roof treatments on the third-generation SLK that may intrigue potential buyers the most.

The automaker is offering three options: A standard body-colored retractable hardtop; an optional dark-tinted panoramic "vario" roof; and a new version of the vario roof that changes from light to dark transparency at the touch of a button — a feature that the Mercedes marketers have dubbed Magic Sky Control.

The SLK's cockpit has been revamped, too, with a choice of standard brushed-aluminum trim or optional dark brown walnut. Other features include a color display for infotainment functions and a flat-bottomed multifunction steering wheel. An intriguing option is "sun-reflecting" leather upholstery, which Mercedes says "noticeably reduces seat temperature" in the summer.

Initially, the car will be available in only one version, the SLK350, powered by a redesigned 3.5-liter V6 that makes 302 horsepower, accelerates from zero to 60 in 5.4 seconds and returns an average 23 mpg.

Later in the model year, Mercedes will introduce a new SLK250, fitted with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 201 hp and coupled with a six-speed manual transmission. Zero-to-60 acceleration takes 6.5 seconds, with a top speed of 155 mph and average fuel economy of 27 mpg.

The 2012 SLK comes with a new driver drowsiness-detection system called Attention Assist. Buyers can also order a Lighting package with cornering and adaptive lamps, as well as Distronic Plus with Pre-Safe Brake, which automatically applies the brakes in an impending rear-end collision.

Fun looking car....for some reason not at the Detroit Auto Show.

Looking forward to a future comparison of the SLK, Z4 and Boxster...(in base format?)

Another great roadster for half the price is the MX-5...but it's not in the same league.

Wow 100x better than the current generic one. They might actually attract some heterosexual male buyers with this one.

    LMAF delray...

And I also agree, this looks so much better than the previous models. They did a great job on the design.

This is a huge improvement over the "sissy" model it replaces.

These cars are going to sell like hotcakes in Boca. All the milf's in training will be driving these cars to Mizner and Town Center mall looking for there old rich dudes.

The interior of this SLK looks better than the SLS interior imo. Mercedes are really improving their interiors - the new C class gets basically the same dash as the E class.
