- The third-generation SLK convertible will get an optional glass roof.
- A button on the dash lets you change the roof from transparent to dark.
- The 2012 SLK-Class will debut at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show.
STUTTGART, Germany — Mercedes-Benz has already begun teasing its redesigned 2012 SLK-Class convertible, well in advance of the car's planned introduction at next spring's 2011 Geneva Auto Show. The first teaser image is of the car's roof — that is, its new power-folding retractable hardtop with "Magic Sky Control."
According to Mercedes, the new glass roof can change from transparent to opaque at the touch of a button on the overhead console. UV and infrared rays are blocked in both modes.
Mercedes says the new roof has several benefits. It prevents the cabin from heating up in direct sunlight. It enables occupants to enjoy a sunlit "open air" experience even on a winter day or remain cool during a hot summer day.
The panoramic roof will be an extra-cost option on the 2012 SLK.
Inside Line says: Cost estimates for the roof range from $2,500-$3,000. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent

Wow... These teaser shots are the equivalent of playboy doing what they do best, but in the dark and only the back of the head is shown. Granted the car will probably look like a mini SLS.

Hasn't this tech been in bathrooms for what, 5+ years? Not that I'm complaining about the appliction, but $2-3K seems high.
