DETROIT — Photos of the redesigned 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL, apparently taken from a sales brochure and a magazine ad, were leaked by members of an online forum just two days ahead of the car's official release. The redesigned SL makes its world debut in early January at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show.
The images appear to be authentic and portray a new design that draws inspiration both from historic SLs of the past and from the range-topping SLS AMG sports car.
Mercedes-Benz also has teased the new SL recently in a series of photos of disguised prototypes undergoing preproduction testing.
The automaker said the 2013 SL will get an all-new, lightweight aluminum body structure, plus two new high-tech systems, including the first application of its unique Magic Vision Control adaptive wiper/washer system, which channels water to the windshield just in front of the wiper blade, and FrontBass audio, which uses the free spaces in the aluminum structure ahead of the footwells as resonance chambers for the bass loudspeakers.

@mercedesfan: I don't think they had much to work with since they have to keep a specific trunk shape and size to accommodate the folding hardtop while keeping a reasonable amount of luggage space in a relatively small wheelbase, no previous SL before the R230 had to deal with this.

Much better than the previous design, I just hope its a new and more sport-focused platform. After more than ten years the other one was starting to be old.

It's official then...
Audi has MUCH better design than BMW and (definitely) MB.
Winning!

I think it looks nice. Apparently, I'm in the minority.

What an ugly combination of bad ideas. From a design perspective MB continues to take 1 step forward and 2...no...3 steps back. This thing looks like a Pontiac Aztec next to the elegantly reshaped 911. Really MB, really?
The term "handsome" isn't quite the compliment you'd want to hear from automotive journalists for a $100k+ flagship. Its like movie critics calling a movie "entertaining" (duh = its a movie, the point is to at least entertain the audience). There are plenty of cars in and around this segment that are more than just handsome. And since style is such a huge factor at this price point, I'm gonna go out on a limb to say this won't be a hot seller.

UGLY! Why can't they just take the SLS headlights
And bolt it in the current SL and call it new? I think that would be a better Idea.

I hope this thing is as ugly as the newly redesign CLS when I saw it in photos, but then saw it in person and was taking away by it's beauty...lets hope that's the case this new SL. Although I will say this, the body still looks like an R230, the roof-line especially, I hope it's not just another face lift.

That rear taken (almost) directly from the new CLS (including the new CLS's rear as well) just has got to go!
