    What Is It?
    2004 Mercedes-Benz SL600

    What's Special About It?
Mercedes once again offers the refinement, and prestige, of a V12-powered SL. Only this time, that bad boy is sporting twin turbos. With a waterfall of power (493 horsepower and a staggering 590 pound-feet of torque) pouring out of the engine bay, this hardtop drop top will be able to hit 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds.

A gaggle of electronic controls worthy of the space shuttle are aboard the SL600, including stability control, active body control (that reduces body roll to virtually nil when in sport mode) and electronic braking that allows faster response when the driver nails the brakes in a panic situation.

One may wonder why Mercedes bothered with the SL600 when the AMG-fortified SL55 offers identical output and performance. The company insists that the visceral SL55 is aimed more at the sports-car types while the SL600, with its turbine-smooth power, is more of a gran tourer.

    Why Should You Care?
If you're going to be featured on MTV's "Cribs" and need the status of a V12 supercar, this isn't a bad way to go. The practical side of us says that the less costly SL55 would be a better "value," if that word can apply to this segment. — John DiPietro
