2001 Mercedes-Benz SL Silver Arrow
What's special about it?
Paying homage to Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix racecars of the 1930s, which had to be stripped of their white paint to meet weight restrictions, leaving their bare aluminum skins exposed, the new SL Silver Arrow edition boasts exclusive silver metallic paint and special 18-inch, two-piece wheels. Polished aluminum trim decorates the exterior and interior of the car. Cross-drilled front and rear disc brake rotors, xenon headlights and heated Nappa leather seats round out this special edition package. The car debuts in spring of 2001, and Mercedes plans a production run of 1,500 units with either a V8 (SL 500) or V12 (SL 600) engine.
Why should you care?
The current SL debuted in 1990, and a major makeover of the car is due to be introduced soon. Mercedes thinks the limited edition Silver Arrow will be a collector's item, and if you like to speculate and have nowhere else to park your savings for the next four decades, this could be as good a place as, say, eToys stock. But don't forget Buick called the final production run of the Riviera a Silver Arrow, and you don't see those commanding a premium in the pages of Hemmings. Christian Wardlaw
