New S-Class models have usually given us big V8s and twin-turbo V12s. Not this time. Mercedes is going after fuel economy and a lower price, not to mention folks who desire that shiny Hybrid badge on the trunk.   The 2010 Mercedes-Benz S400 is the entry level S-Class...   Describes the powertrain and hybrid system.  Inside Line took the S400 to the track, where it went from zero to 60 mph in 7.7 seconds. That's a full 2 seconds slower than the last S550 we tested.  Still, the hybrid system is pretty seamless ... continues to talk about brakes.  Our S400 test car is equipped with all-season tires. This might explain why it took 13 feet longer to stop from 60 mph than the last S550 we tested.  Throw on summer tires, and not only would braking likely be better, but the slalom and skidpad would've improved too. Still, those numbers aren't bad for a big luxury flagship.  But really ...talks about the back seat. Ends talking about the dual front screen.  Aside from performance, the S400 simply doesn't give up any luxury for its fuel-saving ways. And as a bonus, you can travel more than 700 miles on a single tank of fuel.  Sure, the S400 may be the lowly V6 version of the S Class, but it still has plenty of luxury, and you get to tell your friends you got the Hybrid.
