Super-sedan sneak preview in Death Valley

Mercedes-Benz already unveiled official pictures of the upcoming 2007 S-Class, but our latest spy photos indicate that the 2007 Mercedes S63 AMG isn't too far behind. Identifiable by its signature AMG quad exhaust pipes, this prototype was caught undergoing hot weather testing in Death Valley, California. Also in attendance were AMG versions of the 2006 M-Class and 2006 R-Class.

Powering these AMG prototypes is an all-new normally aspirated 6.3-liter V8. Expected to produce around 500 horsepower, this new V8 will be used throughout the Mercedes lineup in various levels of tune. Although not much more powerful than the current supercharged 5.5-liter V8, it should offer a more linear power delivery since it won't rely on a supercharger or turbos for added boost. This new engine may also benefit from the use of Mercedes' seven-speed automatic transmission, although it's currently only in use behind the less powerful 355-hp V8 in the SLK55.

All of the prototypes spotted showed additional signs of AMG tuning with larger wheel-and-tire combinations and more aggressive bodywork. The S63 will probably end up becoming the most popular of the three vehicles, but given that the ML is already on sale with the R-Class expected by the end of the year, it's not clear which one of these AMG rockets will show up first.
