Industry watchers on the Continent say the new model will be larger than the current car, with more interior space and a sleeker exterior design that displays the evolving new face of Mercedes. Even more advanced technology will be offered as well, including a complex control module similar to BMW's controversial iDrive.
A wide range of gasoline and diesel engine choices will be available to customers, as will the company's 4Matic four-wheel-drive system and seven-speed automatic transmission. The range-topping model will be the S65 AMG, powered by a 600-horsepower, 6.3-liter V12. A hybrid gas-electric variant also may be shown at Frankfurt.
The new S-Class won't reach U.S. showrooms until model-year 2007.
What this means to you: The continuing evolution of the S-Class suggests Mercedes is taking a sportier tack with its next-generation flagship sedan. Wouldn't we all like to be seen in something that resembles the exclusive Maybach? The rich just keep getting richer.
