    Mercedes Debuts S-Class to America

DETROIT - Arriving this side of the pond in spring of 1999, the new 2000 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is expected to set fresh super-luxury standards in North America. Shorter, lighter and more efficient that its bulky predecessor, the S-Class actually has more rear legroom than before. Two models will be available: the 275-horsepower S430 and the 302-horsepower S500.

Technologically, the S-Class packs a tremendous punch. One smart cookie, the new S has the world's first smart cruise-control system, a smart airbag system, and a smart climate-control system. Brake Assist and Electronic Stability Control make emergency maneuvers manageable, while the TeleAid communications system dispatches help if the airbags activate or if an occupant touches the SOS button on the control panel. The standard navigation system can be operated with voice commands, while fiber optics handle navigation and audio system inputs. An electronic air suspension with adaptive damping filters rotten pavement from tender backsides.

Designed to reduce driving stress as much as possible, the interior features real wood trim on both models and Nappa leather upholstery on the S500. Also available only on the S500 is a Climate Comfort seat, which circulates air through the seat cushion to draw perspiration from occupants on warm days. Active Lumbar makes the seat "breathe", soothing the spine and back muscles. Hydraulic assists secure doors and the trunk lid.

On paper, the new S-Class sounds like the most luxurious and advanced sedan on the market today. But only a test drive will reveal if BMW's 7-Series loses our vote in the super-luxury arena.
