AFFALTERBACH, Germany — The 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG will make its world debut at the 2009 New York Auto Show and should begin arriving at dealerships by the end of summer. Based on the redesigned E-Class sedan, the new E63 AMG boasts cutting-edge performance, state-of-the-art technology and world-class safety.

Mercedes-Benz has borrowed heavily from the SL63 AMG roadster, notably the normally aspirated 6.2-liter V8, which makes 518 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque and is mated to an AMG Speedshift MCT seven-speed transmission. While top speed is electronically governed to the usual 155 mph, acceleration from zero to 60 mph takes less than 4.5 seconds. The company says fuel economy on the European driving cycle has improved to 18.7 mpg.

The transmission features four individual driving modes and a Race Start function. Manual shifts are performed via paddles mounted behind the AMG four-spoke steering wheel.

The car's driving dynamics have been significantly enhanced by AMG, starting with the Ride Control sport suspension, which features new steel spring struts in front and AMG-specific air springs in the rear, as well as a three-mode electronically controlled damping system. The speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion steering is more direct and precise, and the high-performance brakes get composite technology and perforated discs all around. The E63 AMG rides on 18-inch alloy wheels with 255/40R18 tires in front and 285/35R18s in the rear.

Among the exterior modifications are wider front fenders, a new front apron with large air intakes and LED driving lights, side skirts and a rear apron with a black diffuser shrouding twin chrome-plated tailpipes.

Inside, the car has power AMG sport seats upholstered in leather, as well as an AMG instrument cluster and brushed-stainless steel sport pedals. In the center console is the AMG Drive Unit, which provides controls for the transmission, suspension and stability control functions.

The safety equipment on the E63 AMG is top drawer, including seven airbags, Neck-Pro head restraints, the PreSafe occupant protection system and a new drowsiness detection system called Attention Assist. Mercedes-Benz also offers such safety-related options as Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Adaptive Highbeam Assist, Night View Assist and Speed Limit Assist.

Through the AMG Performance Studio, customers can order an E63 Performance Package that bundles such goodies as 19-inch alloy wheels, larger tires, a stiffer suspension, a locking rear differential and a deck lid spoiler. Free-standing performance options include an Exterior Carbon package, interior carbon-fiber trim, a three-spoke performance steering wheel and illuminated door sills.

Inside Line says: The AMG editions are getting more sophisticated — and technology-laden — with each iteration. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
