WASHINGTON — Mercedes-Benz is recalling 16,130 2009 M-Class vehicles equipped with the optional power liftgate, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"As a result of a faulty seal around the rear taillamp assembly, water may enter the rear compartment containing the spare tire," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "Water contamination of the control unit for the power liftgate can result in disabling of the power liftgate motor. Water will cause a short-circuit, which could lead to a fire."

In other documents filed with NHTSA, Mercedes-Benz says it is "aware of one vehicle fire that may have resulted from water intrusion into the power liftgate control unit." The affected vehicles were built in Alabama between July 2008 and March 9, 2009.

Mercedes-Benz dealers will replace the seal of the rear taillamp assembly with a thicker one and reposition the affected power liftgate control unit inside the chassis for free. The recall is expected to begin during April. Owners can contact Mercedes-Benz at (800) 367-6372.

Inside Line says: If you own one of the aforementioned M-Class vehicles, have it checked out ASAP with your dealer. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
