    What is it?

    What's special about it?
A hit since its debut three years ago, Mercedes' ML-Class SUV underwent a host of minor revisions for the 2002 model year.

Most notable is the new 5.0-liter V8 engine that replaces the former 4.3-liter powerplant. With just over 300 horsepower and vastly improved torque, this engine should make the already swift ML a very capable performer. Standard 17-inch light-alloy wheels with 275-mm-wide tires should further enhance the ML's excellent road manners.

Over 1,100 parts of the car have been modified, but the ML's exterior look remains largely the same. New bumpers, clear lens headlights and revised side mirrors are the most notable changes.

Inside, the center console sports a new look, and woodgrain trim becomes standard on all models. A new automatic climate control system is now standard, and rear seat passengers get dual cupholders and separate ventilation controls.

    Why should you care?
As one of the best-selling vehicles in one of the hottest market segments, the ML proves that Mercedes still has the golden touch when it comes to satisfying American tastes. With more power, more cupholders and even greater overall safety, this revised ML should have no trouble maintaining its solid market position. — Ed Hellwig
