DETROIT - They called this one a "design study", but it's a sure bet that Mercedes-Benz will produce in limited numbers the AMG-massaged ML55 shown at the 1999 North American International Auto Show on Monday. It is the purest definition of "sport-utility" to date.

Powered by a thundering 5.5-liter V8 modified by Benz tuner AMG, the ML55 makes over 340 horsepower and 380 foot-pounds of torque. Flowing through a sophisticated full-time four-wheel-drive system, the ML55 will leap to 60 mph in less than seven seconds and can attain a top speed of nearly 150 mph. Torque is distributed evenly between the front and rear wheels, and an electronic full-time four-wheel traction control system ensures that the ML55 will find grip even if three tires lose their composure.

The ML55 also includes a two-speed transfer case for more serious off-road work, and an Electronic Stability Program (ESP) that helps minimize over- and understeer. However, speed sensitive rack-and-pinion steering assists in keeping the ML55 from needing ESP.

Distinctive exterior enhancements set the ML55 apart from the ML430 and 320. Fender flares, unique rocker panels, power domes in the hood and chrome grille accents give the ML55 a substantial, yet classy, appearance. Chrome also highlights the exhaust tips. Large 18-inch rims fill out the wheel wells, while xenon headlamps and integrated fog lights illuminate the way up front.

Inside, chrome, wood and leather cover most surfaces. White-faced gauges convey information to the driver, and an integrated navigation system helps plot a route to any destination. Side impact airbags for all four doors, a BabySmart child seat recognition system and front seatbelts with force limters and pre-tensioners are standard fare in the ML55.

While technically a design study at this point, plan to expect a production version of the ML55 to become available for sale within the year.
