STOCKACH, Germany — The Mercedes tuner Kicherer has unveiled a package for the European-spec Mercedes-Benz GL420 CDI that gives both the engine and exterior an extensive treatment. It's called the GL42 Black Line.

Kicherer modifies the ECU of the full-size SUV's diesel V8 to increase output to 360 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. The speed limiter has been removed to allow for a maximum speed of 174 mph.

Other performance modifications include a lower and stiffer suspension to help with handling and a two-pass sport exhaust system that gives the driver a little more gas pedal response. The German tuner also puts on a set of 21-inch blacked-out rims with a polished lip.

A new sport steering wheel and carbon-fiber accoutrements adorn the interior, while the outside is dressed in a body kit that comes with new bumpers, black trim, a roof spoiler and a modified grille.

A GL420 CDI with the Kicherer kit comes with a price equivalent to $162,421.

Inside Line says: Kicherer manages to harness the potential of the GL420's engine with just an ECU tune. — Mike Lysaght, Correspondent
