WASHINGTON — Mercedes-Benz is recalling 85,078 2010 E-Class and C-Class vehicles and 2010-'11 E-Class coupe/cabriolet vehicles in the U.S. because the power steering system may fail due to the loss of power steering fluid, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"Owners may not have sufficient control of the vehicle in areas such as parking lots, where maximum power steering is required, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem.
In other documentation filed with the federal government, Daimler AG said it has identified field cases containing complaints from customers "stating minor loss of power steering fluid. A limited number of customers identified reduced power steering during parking.
"After completing a number of process and part inspections, the company and its supplier identified the potential for an incorrect torque setting during the production process. The production process has been modified to eliminate this potential problem."
The documentation was signed by Frank J. Diertl, Mercedes-Benz USA general manager of engineering services, and R. Thomas Brunner, Mercedes-Benz USA department manager of vehicle compliance and analysis.
Mercedes-Benz dealers will check and re-torque the connection fitting. The recall is expected to begin sometime in October. Owners can contact Mercedes-Benz at 800-367-6372.

This is not what I expect personally from Mercedes. Its a huge car company and their testing methods and standards are rated amongst the highest in the world. Though this is a responsible call, I am still disappointed.
