NEW YORK — Mercedes-Benz is demonstrating its latest clean-diesel technology in the E250 Bluetec Concept, which the company said was created specifically for the North American market. The E250 Bluetec Concept was revealed today at the 2009 New York Auto Show.
The heart of the E250 Bluetec is an updated version of the 2.2-liter four-cylinder common-rail turbodiesel engine, mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. Fitted with the Bluetec after-treatment system, the engine meets tough EPA Bin 5 and European EU6 emissions standards, and returns estimated fuel economy of 28 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway.
The engine is rated at 204 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. It is installed in the recently redesigned E-Class sedan, along with Mercedes-Benz's advanced exhaust-emissions-control technology.
The Bluetec system employs twin SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) catalytic converters and a synthetic urea solution injected into the exhaust gases to help scrub nitrogen oxide.
The company said a production-ready E350 Bluetec with a 208-hp V6 turbodiesel will go on sale this fall in Europe. It, too, meets the EU6 standards, which are not slated to take effect until fall 2014.
