BOTTROP, Germany — Cleaner doesn't necessarily mean slower — not as long as Brabus lurks in the bushes.

The famed tuning house has come up with a PowerXtra D6 Blue upgrade kit for the Mercedes-Benz E300 Bluetec "clean diesel" that hikes output by 47 horsepower. Brabus claims its performance package is also the first from any European tuner to meet the stringent new Euro V exhaust emission rules.

Employing an auxiliary module with the car's standard ECU, Brabus is able to coax 255 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque from the 3.0-liter turbodiesel, enabling the E300 Bluetec to gallop from zero to 60 mph in less than 6.8 seconds on its way to a top speed of 155 mph.

The PowerXtra D6 Blue kit costs $2,657. Customers can add a Brabus stainless-steel sport exhaust system with quad tailpipes, as well as an aero body kit and custom alloy wheels in sizes up to 20 inches.

What this means to you: European tuners are finding a new niche — eco-friendly performance. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
