2004 Mercedes-Benz E320 Wagon
What's Special About It?
Dawdling behind the recently revamped E-Class sedan, the wagon blends similarly handsome styling with the functionality of a wagon. And this time those Benz fans who need a wagon and want a V8, too, can get it with the E500 wagon. Also debuting in a Mercedes wagon is an optional Sport package that adds upgrades such as performance rubber, flared rocker panels, bi-xenon headlights with washers, LED brake lights and Airmatic DC active suspension (this last high-tech feature is standard on the E500).
Although everything is pretty much the same as on the sedan, the wagon does offer something that may prevent a sore back. No, we're not talking about well-designed seats (already has 'em) but about an optional powered loading floor. Using hydraulics, the floor moves toward the rear of the wagon, putting heavy objects within easy reach.
As with the sedan, an alphabet soup's worth of safety features, including stability control, airbags galore and electronic braking, are found on the E-Class wagons.
Why Should You Care?
Now that Mercedes has given its midsize wagon dashing looks and the availability of V8 power, BMW's 540i no longer enjoys those advantages over its rival. John DiPietro
