- Mercedes releases prices for its 2012 CLS.
- The CLS 350 CDI starts at $83,100 in Europe.
- CLS won't reach U.S. showrooms until next summer.
STUTTGART, Germany — Mercedes-Benz dealers in Europe have begun taking orders for the redesigned 2012 CLS "quad coupe," with the first customer deliveries expected in January. The CLS won't reach U.S. showrooms until next summer, a Mercedes-Benz spokesman told Inside Line.
In Europe, the CLS will be launched in two new six-cylinder variants, the 262-horsepower CLS 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, priced from $83,100, and the 302-hp CLS 350 BlueEFFICIENCY, priced from $84,650. Prices include 19 percent VAT.
Available for delivery in March is the 201-hp CLS 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, which will return 46 mpg on the European combined cycle and is priced from $78,400.
A month later, the CLS 500 BlueEFFICIENCY, with a 402-hp V8, will be available; pricing hasn't been announced.
All four CLS variants will come with the standard 7G-Distronic Plus seven-speed automatic transmission.
A new standard feature on the second-generation CLS is an electromechanical Direct Steer system, which is said to enhance agility and handling. It also enables Mercedes-Benz to offer an optional Active Parking Assist ($1,140), which can detect and steer the vehicle into a parking space.
For another $2,325, customers can order fully dynamic LED high-performance headlamps, while $3,500 buys the Driving Assistance Package Plus, which bundles Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist.
During its first year only, the 2012 CLS can be ordered with an Edition 1 package ($8,725), which includes matte gray exterior paint, metallic leather upholstery, custom lettered floor mats, black designo roof liner and aluminum pedals. Customers can choose from poplar light-brown satin or ash black high-gloss trim; AMG Carbon trim is available for an extra $13,250.
Inside Line says: At these prices, it won't take much to run even the base CLS up to $100,000. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent

The initiative taken for the concern is very serious and need an attention of every one. This is the concern which exists in the society and needs to be eliminated from the society as soon as possible.

Unless I forgot to do my research before commenting; the only true 4 door "coupe" that I'm aware of is a Mazda RX-8.
That aside; this four door has the same exagerated side funders of a TL, and this is way over priced. I know it's a Mercedes, but come on... 78K for this... I give props to the E63 AMG and it's naturally aspirated v8 going toe to toe with the CTS V, but this car is just niche, and has the same effect that buying a C-Class would signify. "Look I own a Mercedes." I would rather own a Holden product. And I agree with the badges. I haven't seen so many additional icons since the Ford Probe, and GM products of the mid 90"s... v6 24 valve yadda yadda yadda US products of yester year. Now this car is addoping it... hahahaha.... Sorry MB, you will not have a buyer with my hard earned cash.

What's with all the alphabet soup on the trunklids of German cars all the sudden. BlueEFFICIENCY, xDRIVE, sDRIVE, and so on. Keep it simple; they are beginning to look llike American cars during the 1980s when trunklids proclaimed everything from fuel injection to ABS brakes to how many valves the engie had. What's next: tire size and oil change interval?

I am really not a fan of the redesigned, more upright grille, which I believe is for European safety regs.

Well opinions are opinions, and we're all entitled to our own.
The CLS rear end is clearly related to other Mercedes products, but it has a smoother, rounder execution that is relatable to that of the CC, unlike that of the current car, which is a bit blunt tailed.
And honestly, I can't see how one could say that the CLS is more of a 4-door coupe than the other "4-door" coupes. They are all really just sedans with rooflines pulled lower and sleeker styling than the traditional sedan they're based off of, and traditionally seem to give up a middle seat for a console. While we're at it, both the CC and the CLS have frameless windows.
The only way you can really have a "4-door" coupe is to have two half doors that hinge on their rear edge, and commensurately a slightly less spacious back seat. That's my opinion. But we can all agree to disagree.

It is unfair to say that the trunk lid is adapted from the cc when it looks like it was adapted from MB's own CL.

Those comparing this car to other 4 door coupes. Trust me there is no comparison, the CC is a good looking car, but not really a 4 door coupe. When you see a 2012 CLS in person you will realize its true beauty and that none other can hold a candle to it.

Love the Tale of Two Cities reference, lol! Quick correction though, it is Madame Defarge ;)
The options on this car are complete excess, but to be sure, a model like this in the Mercedes lineup is itself excess, so I'm not entirely surprised by the options pricing.
I hope all those extra exterior details look better in person, because right now they're looking like a forced link to the CLS' E-class roots.
Looks like Mercedes picked up on the VW CC's rear end treatment, which was far more coherent than the original CLS's design. Still think that the CC is the car to pull this sedan styling treatment off the best. That's why I happily take second and third glances at my 2010 everday :)

I think the US variant will cost Upper 70's for the base price and max out with all options around 90K. Granted there are more active/passive saftey options this time around. The current model maxed out around 84 -86K.
While most recent MB have gone down in terms of base price (and inetrior appointments to boot) I see a 3-5% increase for this model.
Interesting to see what the US launch edition will be. Keeping my fingers crossed for alcantara headliner to be available as an option.

Your report indicates the CLS550 will have a 402 horsepower V8. Does Edmunds have that correct? The 4.7L twin turbo V8 as announecd for the 2011 CL550 has 429 horsepower. Does this mean that the CLS will get a slightly de-tuned version of that engine? If so, what will the torque number be for the engine in this car??
Thanks
