FRANKFURT, Germany — If Steve McQueen drove German sport sedans instead of American pony cars, he would have gone for the new Bullit, an ultra-performance edition of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class that's being displayed by tuner Brabus at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show.

The German tuning houses are fond of dredging up the "wolf in sheep's clothing" cliché, but the Brabus Bullit may actually merit application of that time-worn expression.

At the heart of the Bullit is the Brabus SV12 engine, a twin-turbocharged 6.3-liter version of the Mercedes V12 engine, with a bigger bore, larger pistons and new cams as well as a remapped ECU. Brabus also fits larger blowers and more efficient intercoolers and a high-performance stainless-steel exhaust system with free-flow mufflers and metal catalysts.

Output is 720 horsepower, and torque is a phenomenal 974 pound-feet. Brabus has modified the Mercedes five-speed automatic transmission and added a rear locking differential. Buyers can choose between two final-drive ratios.

As befits its name, the Bullit can soar from zero to 60 mph in less than 3.9 seconds. Terminal velocity is an amazing 224 mph.

Aero modifications include a front apron with integral air intakes, a rear apron with integral diffuser and a three-piece rear spoiler, all rendered in carbon fiber. A vented aluminum hood also is fitted, as are aluminum wheel arches. Rocker panels feature integrated entrance lamps.

Brabus has mounted Yokohama Advan performance tires on its own Monoblock S 19-inch alloy wheels. Tires sizes are 265/30ZR19 in front and 285/30ZR19 in the rear.

Brabus has added a height-adjustable coil-over suspension with 10 driver-selectable settings, plus heavy-duty stabilizer bars and high-performance brakes.

The Bullit's cabin is trimmed in handcrafted leather from the Brabus upholstery shop, accented in carbon fiber and aluminum.

The Bullit is being built to order, with prices starting at $482,600.

What this means to you: A totally outrageous riff on the new C-Class.
