- AMG's new twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 was unveiled in Germany.
- In standard issue, it will deliver 536 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque.
- The biturbo V8 will first appear in the new S63 AMG.
AFFALTERBACH, Germany — Mercedes-Benz will introduce a new version of the S63 AMG this summer, powered by AMG's new twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8. The new engine was showcased last week in a preproduction version of the new S63 AMG.
The biturbo 5.5 replaces the naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 in the current 2010 S63 AMG, which delivers 518 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque.
Also fitted with gasoline direct injection, the new engine is considerably more potent, despite its smaller displacement. In standard issue, it will deliver 536 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. With the AMG Performance package, which hikes boost pressure from 1.0 to 1.3 bar, output rises to 563 hp and torque to 664 lb-ft.
Performance is also exceptional. Acceleration from zero to 60 mph is accomplished in less than 4.5 seconds, with top speed electronically limited to 155 mph. The AMG Performance package trims the 0-60-mph time by 0.1 second but raises top speed to an electronically limited 186 mph.
AMG also observes that its new biturbo V8, in combination with the Speedshift MCT seven-speed gearbox fitted with a stop-start function, has a combined fuel-economy average of 22 mpg — a 25-percent improvement over the current S63 AMG.
Inside Line says: In a rapidly changing world for performance vehicles, the real achievement here may be the significant increase in fuel economy. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent

Wonder if those turbos would fit on my 5.5 engine?
Another alternative to supercharging with more versatility in tuning!!!!

I have been saying it for 8 years now. Direct injection turbocharged is the wave of the future. more power from a smaller engine without having to compromise compression ratio or intake/exaust runners.

Will this power plant or a similar version be placed in the C AMG?

Something tells me if its dropped into a C-class, it'll be overpowered as it currently is. Still I'd love to push that baby in an S-class.

Wow, can't wait to see this in the E class. My wife's CLS55 AMG is nearing 100k miles and it will be time to replace it soon. She loves the new E class but I'm glad we didn't jump into it yet. This motor in the E class....(shiver)

If the 2010 S63 AMG used an AMG-tuned 6.2 Liter engine, should the next model be renamed the S56 AMG now that it is a 5.5 liter engine?
Nonetheless, like the new engine idea.
With more power than the AMG 6.2 Liter V8, and with 25% better fuel economy, it will make performance fans happy with the power and while the enviromentalists will like it for being one of the most eco-friendly High-Performance V8s in existance (22mpg mixed is equal to around 17city/26hwy - nearly the same as some V6 sports cars)!

Very impressive engine! I can't wait to see it on other applications as well (especially the C63 and SL 63).

Typo?
"In standard issue, it will deliver 563 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque."
As noted later in the article:
"In standard issue, it will deliver 536 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. With the AMG Performance package, which hikes boost pressure from 1.0 to 1.3 bar, output rises to 563 hp and torque to 664 lb-ft."
Regarding the engine, I may not be fond of MB's current design language, but their AMG engines are awesome.
