    What is it?
    Mazda MX Sport Tourer

    What's special about it?
How about a unique multi-mode hybrid drive system that provides zero emissions electric power for urban commuting along with an economical gasoline engine for long-range highway cruising? A regenerative braking system keeps the batteries juiced and a four-wheel-drive mode provides all-weather traction.

Getting in and out is a snap thanks to the "freestyle" door system that features pillar-less suicide doors. Inside, there's a fully retractable roof that can be opened from either the front or the back and rear seats that can be folded fully flat for easy cargo-loading. Up front, the driver and passenger are enveloped in a cockpit-style interior with deep bucket seats and endless aluminum accents.

    Why should you care?
Well, you shouldn't, really. Other than the hybrid powertrain, few aspects of the MX Sport Tourer will likely make their way onto any production models. We would love to see the bitchin' retractable sunroof on a Protege wagon, but we won't be holding our breath. —Ed Hellwig
