HIROSHIMA, Japan — Mazda will have a busy display at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show in March. In addition to the redesigned Mazda 5 and the face-lifted Mazda 6, the Japanese automaker is staging the world debut of the Mazda MX-5 20th Anniversary Limited Edition.
The anniversary model will be built in a limited run of 2,000 units, each with a numbered stainless steel scuff plate. The car will be sold in Europe only.
The special MX-5 is based on the 1.8-liter SE model in Europe. Exterior appointments include chrome grille, door handles and headlight fascia, plus silver-look foglamp surrounds, unique 17-inch alloy wheels and 20th Anniversary logos.
The car can be ordered in one of three colors, including a unique Aurora Blue, with interior trim pieces painted to match the exterior color.
The only other hardware modification is the addition of a front suspension bracing bar.

They already released the 20th Anniversary Edition in Japan last summer. It had a lot of the same stuff here, came only in Pearl White, came only with the 2.0L, had black Alcantara and red leather Recaro seats, and was also available with a soft top (6-spd manual only) or power retractable hard top (6-spd auto only). The big question is will North America get a 20th Anniversary model? There was already a 20th Anniversary celebration in Texas last summer, where Mazda donated a Miata for raffling by the local club. They did the same for the 10th anniversary, but Mazda donated a 10th Anniversary Edition Miata for that. This time, it was just a regular Miata. Much like the RX-8, I feel Mazda is letting the Miata wither away in North America...

Somewhat charming that they're using the original three Miata colors.

A world debut for a car only to be sold in Europe, huh?
